Chapter Eleven

Marko

Despite the police tape surrounding the entire building as well as guards making their rounds in the yard and within the house, there’s only so much work humans can do before they need to “change the guard,” to put it roughly. And it’s in those moments that they’re distracted, waiting to go home so that they can be relieved of duty.

That’s what the cops are doing now, lazing about outside and waiting for the next shift to show up. That gives Natalie and me the perfect opportunity to sneak inside through the basement door on the far side of her ex-boyfriend’s house. Getting inside is the easy part; the hard part is sneaking around without anyone noticing, given that all the lights are on. Our kind is more used to working in the dark, keeping to the shadows so that humans believe we’re mere tricks of the eyes. It’s hard to be an “illusion” in rooms lit up by LEDs and lamps.

We soon find our chance, Natalie in the lead and me behind. I try my best to keep my nose to myself, to not let the intricate smells of so many pervade my senses and make me lose focus.

Nor do I want to let in how much of Natalie’s scent lingers here either. This was before my time, before I’d even known she existed. It wouldn’t be fair to her or her deceased beloved to let my wolf grow angry.

But boy, is it difficult.

We take the steps in threes, alighting at the top in quiet steps that don’t betray our presence to those still outside. Natalie starts to slow and I know why. The smell of blood is strong up here.

“I can go ahead if you need me to,” I whisper, pausing in mid-shifted form so I can speak. Difficult to accomplish given how much taller this form makes me. My ears scrape against the ceiling and I almost bump into a set of dressers in the hallway with several small lamps on top of it. My black fur bristles at the passing of some headlights in the street. Not my favorite form to be in, but it has its advantages.

Natalie shakes her head and follows suit to mirror my form, remaining hunched on all fours to stay low and below the edges of the windows. She’s a marvel in gray fur, all sleek and taut, each muscle well-defined even under her thick layers of fur. A killing machine.

We both are. That’s what the humans have dubbed us. But there’s so much more to us than that. We love, we cry, we bleed... We feel everything that they feel and probably so much more. We have senses they don’t have, and can experience things that are naked to the eye but honest to the heart. Our kind is more than humans could ever hope to really be.

“I have to see this through. It’s what I owe him for... all of this. My secret is the reason he’s dead.”

I nudge at her shoulder with the end of my muzzle to offer some kind of comfort.
